College fees, accommodation and daily expenses can make higher education difficult to manage, particularly for students who depend on family support to continue their studies. Yet many eligible students miss financial assistance simply because they discover scholarship opportunities too late or overlook an application requirement.
The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) 2026–27 currently lists several scholarship schemes with an application deadline of October 31, 2026. These include opportunities for postgraduate students, students from the northeastern states, eligible technical students and specific social categories. The portal has been accepting applications for the academic year since June 1, 2026, and students must complete One-Time Registration (OTR) before applying.
Which Scholarships Should Students Check?
The October deadline does not apply to every scholarship in India, and eligibility varies by scheme. However, students in the following categories should check the official listings without delay.

These schemes have different eligibility rules, and appearing on the portal does not mean every student can apply. Check the NSP scholarship directory for each scheme's current specifications and application status before proceeding.
1. National Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies
Students beginning their postgraduate education should pay particular attention to the National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies. The scheme is intended to provide financial assistance to eligible Indian students pursuing their first postgraduate degree. The University Grants Commission's published guidelines specify assistance of ₹15,000 per month for 10 months per year, for up to two years, subject to the scheme's conditions and selection process.
Eligibility generally requires admission to the first year of a regular, full-time postgraduate degree at an eligible institution, with applicants below 30 years of age at the time specified by the scheme. Distance, correspondence and part-time programmes are excluded under the published guidelines. Students should verify the current requirements and available application option on NSP before submitting their forms.
2. Ishan Uday Scholarship for North Eastern Students
The Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme supports eligible students from the North Eastern Region who want to pursue undergraduate education. UGC's published scheme information specifies financial assistance of ₹80,000 per annum, with eligibility linked to the applicant's region, admission to a regular undergraduate programme and parental income conditions.
This is especially worth checking for students from the northeastern states who have recently entered college. As with other scholarships, applicants must satisfy the full eligibility requirements and any documentation conditions specified in the current scheme guidelines.
3. Technical Scholarships for Girl Students and Students with Disabilities
The NSP listing also includes AICTE Pragati and AICTE Saksham scholarships for eligible students in technical education. Pragati supports eligible girl students pursuing approved technical degree or diploma programmes, while Saksham is intended for eligible students with disabilities pursuing technical education.
The two schemes have specific rules concerning admission, institution approval, disability status where applicable and family income. Students should read the relevant scheme specifications rather than assuming that enrolment in an engineering or diploma programme automatically qualifies them. The current application deadline shown on the NSP listing for these schemes is October 31, 2026.
What Is the Deadline After You Submit?
Submitting an application is only one part of the process. For the schemes listed on NSP with an October 31 student deadline, the portal generally shows November 15, 2026, for institute verification and November 30, 2026, for the relevant district, state or ministry-level verification, depending on the scheme. These verification dates are important because an application may still require action from the institution or designated authority after the student submits it.
The Ministry of Education has also confirmed that the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) application deadline for 2026–27 was extended to October 31. That scheme is different from the college-focused scholarships above: it supports eligible school students, with a scholarship of ₹12,000 per year for qualifying students.
How to Apply Through the National Scholarship Portal
Start at the official National Scholarship Portal and complete your One-Time Registration if you have not already done so. Select the academic year 2026–27, identify the scheme that matches your circumstances, and read its current eligibility requirements before filling in the application.
Keep your academic information, bank details and required supporting documents ready. Enter details carefully, especially your name, bank account information and educational records, because mismatches can create verification or payment problems. After submitting the form, check its status regularly and follow up with your institution if verification is pending.
Do not wait until October 31 to begin. Starting early gives you time to correct errors and resolve document-related issues before the deadline.
What Should Students Do Now?
If you are starting a postgraduate degree, studying in an approved technical programme, belong to an eligible beneficiary category or are renewing an existing scholarship, review the official NSP listings today. Focus on schemes relevant to your circumstances rather than applying indiscriminately.
A scholarship application is not a guarantee of selection or payment, but missing the deadline can remove an otherwise eligible student from consideration. Check eligibility, complete OTR, submit the application and track verification before the applicable deadline. That small amount of preparation can make a meaningful difference to your education expenses.
