For many Indian graduates, the biggest challenge after college is not earning another certificate. It is gaining real workplace experience. Companies often expect freshers to understand deadlines, team workflows, professional tools and practical problem-solving, even when they have just completed their degree.

This is where NATS 2.0 (National Apprenticeship Training Scheme) can be useful. The government-backed platform connects eligible graduates and diploma holders with organisations for structured, paid, on-the-job training. The official scheme generally covers training periods of six months to one year, depending on the apprenticeship.

What Is NATS 2.0?

NATS 2.0 is the digital platform for India's apprenticeship training ecosystem under the Ministry of Education. The revamped portal was launched in 2024 to bring student registration, apprenticeship vacancies, applications, contracts and related processes into one system.

Unlike a typical short-term internship, an apprenticeship is structured around workplace training. Students are placed with an organisation and gain practical experience in their field while receiving a stipend.

The programme covers a wide range of disciplines, making it relevant not only to engineering students but also to graduates and diploma holders from other eligible streams.

Why NATS Matters for Freshers

One of the biggest advantages of an apprenticeship is that it can bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional experience. A student may know Python, Java, electronics, accounting or another technical skill, but working inside an organisation teaches a different set of skills: collaboration, documentation, debugging, reporting, deadlines and professional communication.

The scale of the programme also makes it worth watching. A government update reported 5.23 lakh apprentices engaged under NATS during 2025, with participation across sectors including IT/ITeS, electronics, manufacturing, automotive, BFSI, logistics and professional services.

Who Can Apply?

NATS provides opportunities for eligible engineering and technology graduates, graduates from general streams, vocational graduates and diploma holders. Exact eligibility can differ between vacancies, so students should always read the requirements of the individual apprenticeship before applying.

Students should also understand that NATS is not a direct government-job scheme. It is an apprenticeship and training route. The organisation makes the final selection, and post-training employment depends on the employer and the terms of the particular opportunity.

What About the Stipend?

The government framework specifies minimum stipend rates, with official documents currently citing ₹9,000 per month for graduate apprentices and ₹8,000 for technician or diploma apprentices. Employers may offer higher amounts depending on the role and organisation.

Another useful benefit is the experience gained during the apprenticeship. Government and apprenticeship-board material states that successful completion of a one-year graduate or technician/diploma apprenticeship can be treated as one year of experience for employment in Central and State establishments, subject to the applicable rules.

How NATS 2.0 Works

The process is straightforward: register, complete your profile, search vacancies, apply, get selected and complete the apprenticeship.

Students should keep their academic certificates, Aadhaar details, mobile number, email address, photograph and bank information ready while creating their profile. Once registered, they can search available opportunities and apply for roles matching their qualification.

The most important part is choosing the right opportunity. A computer science graduate, for example, should prioritise apprenticeships related to software, IT, data, testing or cybersecurity instead of applying to every vacancy simply because it offers a stipend.

NATS vs a Regular Internship

A regular internship can be excellent, particularly when it comes from a strong company and provides meaningful project work. NATS offers another formal route with a government-backed apprenticeship structure, defined training and certification.

For a fresher with a resume dominated by courses, certificates and academic projects, an apprenticeship can add something employers often look for: evidence that the candidate has worked in a real organisation.

What Students Should Do Now

Students who have recently graduated or completed a diploma and are still looking for their first professional opportunity should check the official NATS 2.0 portal rather than relying only on private internship platforms.

Do not treat the apprenticeship as just a way to earn a stipend. Choose a role that matches the career you want to build, learn from the team, document the skills you develop and turn the experience into strong resume points and interview stories.

The broader opportunity is simple: college gives you the foundation, while an apprenticeship can give you the workplace experience to prove you can use it.
