OpenAI nowadays is now considering taking a legal action against Apple over the way they have integrated ChatGPT into iPhones and other Apple devices. According to the report presented by Bloomberg, serious tensions have been brewing between both the companies after OpenAI became unsatisfied with how ChatGPT has been positioned within Apple’s ecosystem.
In June 2024, their partnership was first unveiled during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. Under this agreement, ChatGPT was integrated with Siri and Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature, allowing users to access AI-powered assistance directly through Apple devices.
However, OpenAI had reportedly hoped that the partnership would greatly boost ChatGPT’s exposure and attract a substantial number of paid subscribers from iPhone users. But the company now feels that the AI tools are too deeply integrated within Apple’s software ecosystem, making them hard for users to find and engage with regularly. The report also states that the revenue generated from the collaboration has reportedly been far below what OpenAI had anticipated.
As per them, ‘OpenAI needs to take a leap of faith and trust us,’” an OpenAI executive reportedly told Bloomberg. “It didn’t work out well.”
Bloomberg further reports that OpenAI has already brought in an external law firm to explore potential legal avenues. While this could eventually result in a formal breach-of-contract notice being issued to Apple, a full-scale lawsuit is reportedly not expected anytime soon. The report adds that any significant legal action may be delayed until OpenAI resolves its ongoing dispute with Elon Musk.
Apple, on the other hand, is said to have its own reservations about the partnership. The company reportedly remains cautious about OpenAI’s approach to user privacy and is also increasingly concerned about the AI company’s growing ambitions in the hardware space. That hardware initiative is reportedly being spearheaded by former Apple executives, including legendary ex-design chief Jony Ive.
